Stress affects all of us  -- but for many professionals, it becomes part of everyday life long before they realise just how much it's impacting their wellbeing.

Stress rarely arrives suddenly. It builds slowly, creeping into your thoughts, your body, and your ability to cope.

If you've been feeling more overwhelmed, irritable, or exhausted than usual, you may be noticing the early (or advanced) signs of stress taking over.

Common Signs of Stress You May Be Overlooking

Stress can show up in ways that feel subtle at first. You may notice:

·         Feeling constantly tired, even after rest

·         Difficulty concentrating or making simple decisions

·         A sense of overwhelm that doesn't match the task

·         Tension headaches, tight shoulders, or digestive issues

·         Feeling disconnected from yourself or your work

·         Irritability or emotional sensitivity

·         Loss of motivation or enjoyment

These symptoms are not weaknesses  -- they are signals that your body and mind need attention and support.

Why Stress Can Be Hard to Recognise

Many professionals push through stress for months or even years before acknowledging how much it affects them. You may have responsibilities, deadlines, people counting on you, or a fear that easing off means “letting someone down”.

But recognising stress is not a failure.

It is the beginning of moving toward balance.

Small Adjustments You Can Try to Reduce Stress

You don't need big life changes  -- small tweaks can make a meaningful difference. Try one of the following:

1. The 60-second grounding pause

Stop, place your feet on the floor, take a slow breath in, and exhale longer than you inhale.

Repeat 3 times.

This signals safety to your nervous system.

2. A simple “brain break”

Every 90 minutes, step away from your screen for 2 minutes.

Stand, stretch, look out of a window.

Your mind will reset more easily.

3. Reduce one commitment

Pick one task, expectation, or responsibility that feels heavy  -- and either delegate it, delay it, or drop it.

This builds confidence and reduces overwhelm.

4. Ask your body one question

“What do I need right now?”

Rest? Water? Movement? Quiet?

Your body usually knows.
